Dear Milk Marchers,

Monday night on Castro street and Friday night on Market street brought back so many memories, I wanted to express my gratitude to each of you for the important part you played in bringing Harvey's story to the screen. On behalf of Director Gus Van Sant, Screenwriter Lance Black,  Producers  Dan Jinks and Bruce Cohen, and the entire cast and crew of MILK, I thank you for showing up, for your patience and cooperation, and for being true to Harvey's spirit and vision of this beautiful city.

- Cleve Jones

And, because Monday and Friday nights turned out to be such wonderful experiences for us (and, hopefully, for you), WE ARE INVITING PEOPLE BACK TO BE IN THE MOVIE ONE LAST TIME and help us re-create Gay Freedom Day 1978 on Sunday Morning, March 9th.

All participants are to report at 11am to Civic Center Plaza, on the Polk street side of City Hall. Be prepared to stay for a few hours.

*Daylight Savings Time begins on Saturday night, so don't forget to set your clocks forward one hour.

The real event was a sunny day in June, so we are asking eveyone to wear their best 70's June in San Francisco clothes (see wardrobe instructions below), but feel free to bring a jacket, sweater or sweatshirt to wear when the cameras are not rolling.

Other points to consider:

  • There will be water available, but food will not be provided.
  • City Hall will not be open.
  • There is very little parking available, so we encourage everyone to use public transportation.

Please sign up below if you would like to attend.

By agreeing to participate in this recreation, you hereby grant Milk Productions, LLC the right, but not the obligation, to photograph you and exploit your likeness, voice and other sound effects in and in connection with the production, exhibition, distribution, promotion, exploitation, publicity and advertising of a motion picture without compensation in all media throughout the universe in perpetuity.

  • Women's skirts:  Knee length, denim, cotton wrap.
  • Tops: Solid color t-shirts, tank tops, spaghetti strap tank tops for women, simple graphic t shirts. Polo style shirts, cotton short sleeve button down shirts, ethnic prints, lighter weight cottons. Simpler generic Gay Pride type graphics are allowed and encouraged.

  • Hats: Baseball, visors and bandannas for longer hair, etc.
  • Shirtless looks for men are encouraged, as it was popular to go shirtless on sunny days in the Castro in the 70's usually with tight Levi's and sneakers. It is important to make sure that not too many tattoos are present, as it was not yet as common in 1978 to have many tattoos.
  • The overall vibe is a sunny day in San Francisco -- all sorts of types of clothing looks are encouraged, as in 1978, Gay Freedom Day was a diverse community event and did not only feature any one type of person. 70's appropriate drag and leather is OK.

  • NO overt rainbow themed outfits, as the rainbow flag was not yet the official symbol of the gay community in 1978.
  • NO "circut party" clothing or "Rave clothing" that would read as trendy or modern.
  • NO trendy designer jeans with overt modern finishes; extremely faded legs, wiskering, embroidery, large logos, etc.

  • NO clothing items that are made from identifiable modern materials such as Polar Fleece, Velcro, gore tex, etc.
  • NO modern-looking sneakers that appear to be made with advanced materials, air pumps, clear rubbers, etc.
  • NO Garish bright colors such as BRIGHT white or red, or "Wacky" disco-themed 70's "Halloween Costumes"
